Note for: Joseph Watkins Spence, 25 JUL 1839 - 1908 Index
According to "Civil War Soldiers from Brunswick County, Virginia:"
Joseph Spance enlisted in the Brunswick Grays at Richmond 2 July 1861,
the same day his brother Benjamin enlisted. This company became Co. G,
21st Virginia Infantry Regiment, and was assigned to General "Stonewall"
Jackson's Second Brigade.
Joseph served through the entire war. His brother Benjamin became a
wagoner for Gneral Jackson's army, and Joseph may have been one also but
the records fail to mention this. He was present for all roll calls
through the war, as reflected in muster roll records. He fought through
many engagements and was at Petersburg during its siege. On The Retreat,
he surrendered at Appomattox Court House 9 April, 1865.
Joseph came home from the Civil War and returned to farming.
---------
Joseph was living in Ebony in 1900 when, on 21 May, he applied for a
Civil War pension, stating in his pension application that he was
"disabled by exposure during the war" and was "unable to work." He said
he was suffering from "old age and bad health."
In 1908, Joseph signed the pension application of Ann Elizabeth (-)
Whitby, widow of Cary Whitby. At this time, Joseph was 70 years old. He
died 8 June of that year. He and Tabitha are in Prospect Methodist Church
Cemetery at Ebony.
