Note for: Jesse Braswell, BEF. 1754 - 1827 Index
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------
Abstract will of Jesse Braswell recorded in Will book 10 p. 456, Brunswick county, Virginia, in Dec 1827. His will was dated 29 Oct 1827 and probated 24 Dec 1827.
Kizzy must have died before her father's will was written as he leaves a portion of his estate to her children. Lewis B. Taylor is an executor.
-
As per mail sent to me by Regina Roper (descendant of Jesse's daughter, Kezziah):
"Jesse Braswell is an enigma. He may be the son of John or Jacob Braswell...the 2 in question being children of Richard Braswell of Isle of Wight Co VA...John married Alice Cobb, Jacob married Elizabeth
Ruffin, but documents to support Jesse as either of their sons not found yet.
[my note: due to age difference, I believe there to be an extra generation in between here to Jesse]

I am more of the opinion that the Jacob that married Elizabeth Ruffin would be the correct line. Jacob was long used name in 3 out of the next 4 generations down the line. I do not have a Jacob for the generation of Marcus, but I only have found 3 children of that generation so far. There certainly are more., and possibly a Jacob.
Also, Jesse's daughter, Nancy, that married John Williams, had a son named Ruffin Williams. This seems to indicate a Ruffin surname connection. At this time, I only have children for 2 of Jesse's 8 children and cannot determine if there may be more clues in how they were named.
-
There are several Braswell and Ruffin marriages listed in Edgecombe co, N C in the 1800's.
-
Also at a later date of Sept 9, 1848, James Ruffin Seward married an Elizabeth C Wesson in Brunswick county, Virginia. This indicates a Ruffin conection to the Seward line and ties in with the Jacob Braswell and Elizabeth Seward marriage in Brunswick co, Va in Jan 1817.
-
Also I have seen some Ruffin and Moore connections. Moore being a family that traveled west with the Braswells and Sewards.
-
1787 Brunswick county Va Tax List B only shows one Braswell. Lewis Braswell taxed on personal property of 2 horses/mules.
-
From Ray Sasser: "The 1787 Brunswick tax list that includes Lewis Braswell also includes Jesse
(Sr.), but under the frequently used variant spelling of "Brassell." Many 18th documents use this spelling, and I see it in Brunswick right up to the Civil War and at least once after the Civil War. It reflects the actual pronunciation of the name prior to the mid 1800's. Even when it was spelled
"Bracewell" in the seventeenth century, it was pronounced as "Brassell."
Ray speculates that the parents of Jesse may be John Braswell/Brassell and Jane Cooper Lewis.
